Control of Air Pollution Bhushan

Steel & Power Limited is deeply passionate about maintaining a clean and green environment in & around its plants. Air pollution is one of the major challenges that any company has to overcome in order to adhere to environmental norms. Keeping this in mind, BPSL follows a procedure of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) for the prevention of Air Pollution. Every aspect of pollution generated due to plant activities is monitored in detail and adequate steps are taken to minimize it. The company has installed state-of-art pollution control devices suitable for the purpose of reducing atmospheric pollution. Real time check on performance of these devices is done through automated online analyzers such as Opacity Meters and Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (AAQMS).

Some of the air pollution measures (unit wise) adopted by BPSL are as follows:

Emissions

  • In DRI Kilns, the dust Settling Chambers and ESPs (Electrostatic Precipitators) have been installed to control process emissions. Fugitive dust is controlled through multiple point suction hoods attached to bag filters. Dry fog dust suppression system is provided at required places.
  • In Power plant, the flue gas from boilers is passed through ESP's where particulates are separated.
  • In Coke Oven Plant, waste gases are burnt completely and the heat generated is used in Waste Heat Recovery Boilers (WHRB) for power generation.
  • In Sinter Plant, a centralized de-dusting system with an Electrostatic Precipitator is installed for dust control in the raw material handling area. Additionally high capacity ESP also exists to control process emissions.
  • In Blast Furnaces, the gases are cleaned through cyclone and two-stage venturi scrubber (Gas Cleaning Plant). Pulse jet and invertible bag filters have been installed to control emission from the stock house and cast house.
  • In SAF, emission from the furnace is drawn in to high capacity dust extraction system, where particulates are trapped and treated gas is passed through chimney.
  • In SMS (EAF & Ladle Furnace), the gases are sucked through the Fume Extraction System and taken to After Combustion Chamber for converting CO to CO2. Thereafter, the gases are passed through a cooling system, forced draft cooler, spark arrester to control coarse dust and subsequently through high efficiency bag filters to separate particulates.
  • Other fugitive emissions: The fugitive emissions caused through non-process activities such as haul roads and stock yards are managed through good housekeeping practices and regular dust suppression through fixed and mobile sprinklers.

Control of Water Pollution

Waste Water management

Water pollution is a major environmental concern today that adversely affects the surroundings, causing serious injury to the environment as well as human health. At BPSL, water pollution is controlled by adopting a range of stringent regulatory measures and monitoring processes. The company has attained 'Zero Discharge' status by adopting state-of-the-art technology for water treatment. As per the guidelines of CREP, a 4.3 4.9 m3 per T of long product is currently being used by BPSL.Through effective water conservation and reuse methods specific water consumption for long product and flat product is maintained within range of 4.2 5.3 which is much below the CREP guideline of MoEF.

Some of the measures, which have been implemented for effective control of water pollution, are as follows:

Raw Water Supply

  • Coke Oven Quenching: The waste water generated during quenching is taken to settling tanks. After settling, the water is reused for quenching the hote coke.
  • Sinter plant: Blow-down water is used in sinter nodulizing.
  • Blast furnace: Dust laden waste water is treated in effluent treatment plants and the treated water is recycled back to the process to scrub blast furnace gas.
  • SMS: The waste water is taken to a settling tank and the outlet water of the tank is reused. The blow-down water is used in slag granulation.
  • Rolling mill: Process waste water is skimmed for oil and scale and then recycled back to the plant. No wastewater is discharged.
  • DRI: Cooling close-circuit effluent-recycling system has been installed. Waste water from the cooling section is taken to a hot water well and then to the cooling tower and the cold water well, from where it is recycled back into the process.
  • Power Plant: DM plant wastewater is treated in the neutralization pit. After treatment, the water is reused for wet ash handling system.
  • Submerged Arc Furnace: Waste water is reused for slag cooling and dust suppression.
  • Sewage Treatment Plants (STP): Three sewage treatment plants (combined capacity 3050 KL/ day) have been installed. The treated water is 100% reused for horticulture and green cover.
  • Garage, DG Set & Compressor Houses: Oil separators have been provided. Clean water is further treated in the STP.
